- Hi,
-
- I have a Digicom Scout Plus 14.4k internal fax modem that
- chokes (many CRC errors) when I download anything that
- is not text (GIFs, .exe, .gz, .zip files etc.). I have the
- same problem uploading too with the exception that my FAX
- (from MS Word + WinFax) goes out just fine. Once
- it chokes, I have to reconnect even to get/put text files.
- I do have a 16550A UART so I guess this is not a problem
- with my serial card. So I 'm trying to figure out if the
- modem is the culprit.
-
- I have the following questions.
-
- 1. Does the Scout Plus internal have a history of known
- problems that I 'm not aware of?
-
- 2. COM1 on my PC (CompuAdd 486 with a Micronics mother board)
- is connected to the mouse. I also have another external serial
- port(DB9). I opened up my PC and found that this second port is
- connected to something that is labeled "com2" on my mother board (the
- first port is connected to something labeled "com1" on my board). Can I
- connect an external modem on this port? I tried it but couldn't
- figure out a way to tell my computer to use that external modem.
- My computer continues to look for the internal modem even if I remove
- my internal modem card. When a computer works with an internal modem
- in a given expansion slot, does it mean that COM2 is hardwired to that
- particular expansion slot and cannot be used with an external modem or
- an internal modem in a different expansion slot?
-
- Any help is appreciated. If you post, please email a copy.
